Staycation Volcano Style

capulinaerial.jpg
Have you ever wanted to walk into a volcano? Well, Capulin Volcano is one of the few places in the world where you can do just that.

While heading home one year from Red River, NM, we decided to take a different route home.  That's when we stumbled upon one of my favorite places on Earth.  (So far!)  We were driving on one of the most desolate roads I had ever been on.  And then, out of nowhere, there it was!  An entire volcano field.  This was my first time to ever see a volcano up close.  Sure, I had seen them from a distance in Albuquerque, but to be this close was a first for me! As we got closer we started seeing signs for Capulin Volcano National Monument, and of course we had to check it out!  From the photo you can see a road that spirals around the volcano.  That road is two miles long and as you can see does not have any guard rails!!!!  So as we drove (white knuckled) up to its altitude of 8,182 feet, we start to realize this was the coolest thing we could of ever happened upon.  Once to the top you can park your car and then hike into the crater!!  Now that's pretty cool! Visit the website for more info: Capulin Volcano National Monument
Also if you're in the area you might want to visit Folsom.  Folsom is famous as the site of the most significant archaeological discovery in the US, when following a large flash flood in the Wild Horse Arroyo, a local resident (George Mcjunkin) discovered a large number of bison bones, some with embedded stone spear heads.  The bones were later dated at 10,000 BC,  which doubled the length of time man was known to have inhabited this continent.  The town has a small museum, not always open, with exhibits about the discovery of 'Folsom Man'.  The Capulin Volcano is six miles south of Folsom but clearly visible for many more miles across the surrounding grasslands.

Staycation with the Outlaws

Belle Starr

With spring right around the corner I've been doing a lot of thinking about fun little weekend getaways.  (Well let's just say I wish it was right around the corner!)  So I thought I would share with everyone some of our family's most memorable weekend getaways.  I'll post a few today then throughout the next month add to this!
As a homeschool family we LOVE any little getaway that we are able to turn into a teaching experience.
Jesse James
So one year, we were learning all about the outlaws of the wild west and one trip led to another, and the next thing we knew we were on a journey of outlaws like Jesse JamesBelle StarrBlack Jack Ketchum, and Buffalo Bill Cody.

So here is the journey our family took in these outlaw's foot steps......
Most of these places are only a days drive away, some are just an hour or two depending on where you live.  However far it may be, if you are able to make it to one of these locations make sure to brush up on your history and you're sure to have a great trip!

  • Robbers Cave located on the outskirts of the Sans Bois Mountains community in Wilburton, Oklahoma.  Robbers Cave State Park offers camping/cabins, horseback riding, paddle boats, fishing, hiking, and much much more.  When our family went we rented a cabin for the weekend.  We had such a great time!!  We took the renowned hike from our cabin to the famous Robbers Cave.  This in itself is a full days activity.  Once you're at the cave, there is plenty of exploring to do.  Remember this place is large enough for the outlaws to hide from the police back in the day.  And if your kids have a little knowledge under their belts about what they are exploring it makes for a very interesting day!  Later that evening we loaded up the family and went to one of the our favorite Italian places around. (Only a few minutes from our cabin we were staying at.)  Pete's Place,  for those of you who have ate there, need I say more?  For those of you who haven't, well you'll just have to go.  It's family style and if you call ahead you can reserve a room all to yourself.  You place your order and then the waiter closes the door behind him and you and your family sit back and enjoy your dinner in your own private room.  After getting our bellies full, we headed back to our cabin to make smores over a campfire, oh and told BIG FOOT stories.  Because this is BIG FOOT country ya know!!!!  The next day we took the family to the Italian market, now this is one place you won't want to miss!!!!!!!!  Trust me on this!!!!!  After sampling several foods and finding my new favorite pasta sauce, we headed back to our cabin for more outdoor adventures.
  • Cafe On the Route, this is a little restaurant in Baxter Springs, Ks.  Some really good friends of ours were living there and invited us up to visit.  The night before we were watching food network's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, and this cool little place was on the show!!!  Of course with us going the next day we wanted to try it out.  Come to find out, this little place was once a bank; and not just any bank, it was a bank that was robbed by Jesse James himself!  (Just imagine if we followed today's bank robbers around like this!)
  • There are still bullet holes in the ceiling
tiles from Jesse James and the
    wild west outlaws
St. James Hotel,  now whether you believe in ghosts or not is up to you.  But for me real or not real does not take away form the fact that I'm a big chicken!!!  So when we went to this place we went during the day time and did not, let me repeat, DID NOT get a room!  It's famous not only for it's deep history with outlaws, but also for their ghosts who still roam the hallways to this day.  History is what brought us to this place.  From the registery filled with all the outlaws signatures, to the old roulette table on display next to the very antique piano, it has something for everyone.  It's set up like a museum and it's FREE to tour the hotel.  There are several historical items on display, and if you make an early reservation the hotel offers a Mystery Dinner Theater.

Well I hope some of you will get to enjoy some of these places made famous by American Outlaws.
If you do, please come back and comment on this post and share your families adventures with everyone.

I look forward to sharing more STAYCATION experiences with you next week.  Till then........

I heart fashion swaps!!!

I'm not really sure how they got started.  Maybe it's the economy or a great idea that just exploded, but fashion swaps are my new favorite thing!  It takes consignment to a new level.  I guess not even a new level, it's like a new thought process.........  No money needed, because its FREE!  For those of you who have never heard of a "fashion swap" here is a sample of how this year's swap in Atlanta will work:

  • Check in your clothes and accessories you no longer wear (up to 10) at the check in desk, between 7:00 and 8:00pm.
  • You will receive a ticket for each item you check in.
  • Enjoy food and drinks whilst catching up with friends and meeting other Atlanta fashionistas.
  • The swap event will start at 7:00pm.
  • You will be called in the order that you arrived. The first person to arrive will be the first person to browse through the racks and find some 'new to you' items.
  • Once you have selected your items, please proceed to the check out to finalize your selections.
  • You will be able to try on items if needed but make it snappy because the next number will be called while you are trying on your items.
  • You can take the items that you brought back with you or leave them to be donated to charity.
The cool thing is you can do this yourself at a small level with a group of friends and family.
Here are a couple websites to help you get started......  ENJOY!

Why i love my maya wrap....

Ok if you don't have one, know of someone who needs one, or have a baby shower to attend in the near future, this baby sling is for you!! It is the best baby product hands down!!!!!

This sling was given to me by a friend of mine. I had purchased two other slings prior to receiving the Maya Wrap. And both were VERY VERY uncomfortable!! From the moment I put on the Maya Wrap, I knew this was the sling for me! I have worn this sling for hours. It's been to zoos, amusement parks, baseball games, hikes, the list goes on and on.............. I said all that to say this, you can wear this for hours and not once do you ever have back or shoulder pain do to wearing a child in this sling!
I started using this sling when my little one was three months old and now she will be three years old in just a couple of months and we are still using it!

NBA trade deadline..... Feb 24!!!!!

With the NBA trade deadline right around the corner, all this trade talk is making me crazy!!!! I just can' handle suspense, and not knowing what your team will look like after Feb. 24th is enough suspense to make me really crazy. The trade rumors can change minute to minute. As of yesterday the talk was all "Carmelo Anthony". Will he goto the Knicks, Nets, Mavericks, or stay in Denver? Well breaking news today is that he WILL NOT be going to the nets! However new talks are that there is a chance that the Mavericks (MY TEAM) could acquire Carmelo Anthony and Devon Harris! WoW
